Who It’s For
A three-week youth performance climbing trip to Rocklands, the best bouldering in the world.
Realization's Rocklands Performance Camp is a fully supervised youth outdoor climbing trip for athletes 14 to 18. It's built for athletes ready to progress as climbers and grow as people. We will spend our days climbing on world-class boulders with the support of elite coaches. Our evenings will consist of recovery, coach check-ins, and time as a team. Our rest days will take advantage of where we are: a safari, pre-historic rock art tours, sights of African penguins, and the culture of an entirely new continent.

For three weeks, athletes will:

01
Project world-class boulders
Coaches guide the process from the first day to the last. In week one, coaches lead athletes through the main sectors to sample the best boulders Rocklands has to offer. In weeks two and three, athletes return to the boulders and project them with a coach helping them refine their movement, strategy, and mindset on every attempt.

02
Develop outdoor climbing skills
Coaches teach all the skills required to be an independent outdoor climber: finding the boulders using a guidebook, building safe landing zones, spotting technique, and managing conditions, skin, and energy. By the end of the trip, athletes develop independence, confidence, and resilience they didn't have before.

03
Train with elite coaches
Every athlete gets personalized coaching. At the beginning of the trip, coaches set goals with each athlete. Each morning, coaches check-in with athletes on how they are feeling, and plan for the day based on that check in. At the crag, coaching covers movement, tactics, and projecting strategy, and evening debriefs turn the lessons from that day into a plan for tomorrow.

04
Climb alongside a motivated team
We bring a team of like-minded athletes, all here to climb harder. Three weeks of shared projects, shared meals, and shared rooms turns a group of teenage climbers into lifelong friends.

05
Expand their worldview
Rest days take athletes beyond climbing and into South Africa: a safari, a local fish fry on the coast, and tours of the local rooibos farms in the Cederberg Mountains. For many, it's their first time in Africa, and it changes how they see the world.

06
Come home confident and independent
Three weeks on the other side of the world ask a lot of a teenager, and that is the point. Athletes manage their own skin, energy, and gear, help cook on rest days, and navigate international travel with the team. On the boulders, they spend days on problems that don't go the first time, or the tenth. They come home more confident, more independent, and more resilient, in climbing and beyond it.
Why Realization?

Safety is built into every day.
Every Realization coach is Wilderness First Responder and CPR certified, SafeSport trained, and cleared through a criminal background check. Coaches run a comprehensive risk assessment at every sector, practice emergency response regularly, and know Rocklands well: between them, they've been there five times and coached dozens of athletes there. No athlete climbs without a coach present, and the group carries a satellite communicator.

We are career coaches.
Realization coaches have coached for USA Climbing and on youth teams that have produced World Cup athletes, run international programs for groups of more than twenty students, and led youth climbing trips abroad for more than ten years together. Learn more about our coaches background.

Personalized planning and communication.
Every family meets the coaches on a pre-trip video call and has a direct WhatsApp line to staff. Midway through, parents get a written update with photos, and anything a family would want to know comes from us the same day, by phone.

Our 2026 results.
In 2026, every athlete on the team set a personal best and five of our eight athletes sent multiple V10+ boulders, including Into the Void (V12), Barracuda Sit (V12), Pendragon (V11), and Macho King (V10).
Testimonials
A Typical Day
Breakfast + Goal Setting
The day begins at 8am with a healthy breakfast. During this time, coaches consult with each athlete to assess their energy levels, set goals for the day, and discuss tactics.
Warm Up
Once athletes are fed and ready for the day, the group does a warm-up at the lodging focusing on mobility, light hangboarding, and muscle activation. Lunches get made, bags get packed, and the team then loads the vans to head to the boulders.
Climbing Session
Once at the crag, the team finishes warming up on easier boulders and begins to work on individual projects with coach support. Throughout the day we move to different areas, allowing athletes to try multiple boulders as well as encouraging periodic breaks for skin management, fueling, and resting.
Dinner
On climbing days, the group eats at the Farm Stall before heading back to the hostel. There, we eat local meals sourced from the farms around Rocklands. The meals often include a good mix of veggies, meats, and carbs, but the restaurant can accommodate any dietary restriction.
Nights
Athletes room by gender, up to three to a room, and coaches sleep in the same area in their own rooms. Lights out is 10:30. The code of conduct rules out alcohol, tobacco, and other substances — for staff as well as athletes.

Questions before applying? Feel free to reach out — we’re happy to help.
-
Our price includes everything but airfare and travel insurance – that means lodging, food, transport in-country, and of course performance-oriented coaching drawing on over a decade of experience.
-
After years of experience taking athletes to international climbing destinations, we’ve learned how to select areas that offer challenges to a range of ability levels. If a student is accepted to join a trip, it means we’ve taken their experience into account and are confident they can push themselves in a safe and enjoyable way.
-
The first step in the process is to apply. Once we have determined whether the athlete is a good fit, we will reach out with details on securing a spot.
-
We require a nonrefundable 20% deposit to book the trip – this covers our overhead in the event of cancellation. However, we understand that circumstances change, and if you need to cancel a trip after the deposit has been paid, we are happy to offer a voucher to be used for future trips.
-
Yes, we are happy to help book travel. For every trip, we have a recommended flight itinerary to allow athletes to travel with a coach – if this is of interest, we can make it happen.
-
The packing list depends on the trip – upon acceptance to your trip you will be provided with a full packing list.
-
Pre-trip training is recommended, but not mandatory, and we understand that athletes on climbing teams may not be able to train specifically for the trip prior to departure.
We can design custom training plans for interested athletes for a small fee – email info@realizationclimbing.com to learn more.
-
Rest days are a great opportunity to experience the culture and beauty of the countries we visit. Every trip is different, but rest days usually involve a fun excursion – visits to local museums, hiking, beach days, culinary experiences, and even safaris.
-
Rocklands is our most advanced program. Applicants climb V8 or harder in the gym, or compete at Divisional level in their category. Beyond the grade, we look for athletes who train at least three days a week and who take feedback well. Outdoor experience is not required, and many athletes arrive with little.
-
Three coaches travel with twelve athletes, keeping a ratio of 1:4. Every coach is Wilderness First Responder and CPR certified, SafeSport trained, and cleared through a criminal background check. No athlete climbs without a coach present, and staff supervise meals, excursions, and evenings.
-
The group stays at the hostel at Traveller's Rest, which is reserved for our group alone. Athletes room by gender, two to three to a room, and rooms are assigned by staff after the pre-trip calls. Coaches sleep in the same area, in their own rooms, and lights out is at 10:30. The code of conduct prohibits alcohol, tobacco, and other substances for staff as well as athletes.
-
Every coach carries a first aid kit, and the group carries a Garmin InReach satellite communicator. The nearest hospital is in Clanwilliam, which is about 25 minutes from the house. The vehicles stay with the group at all times. Consent to treat is signed on the medical form and carried by staff. Families are called the same day, by phone. Our 2026 cohort came home with no injuries.
-
Yes. On climbing days the group eats dinner at the Traveller's Rest Farm Stall, and their kitchen accommodates every dietary restriction we bring them. On rest days we cook together, and groceries come from Clanwilliam, 25 minutes away. Families list dietary needs and allergies on the medical form and go over them again on the pre-trip video call, so we can plan ahead.
-
Yes. There is wifi at the house, and athletes keep their phones for calling home. South Africa is eight hours ahead of Mountain Time, so evenings in Rocklands land in the late morning back home. We structure evening activities to keep screen time down.
-
Every family meets the coaches on a pre-trip video call before departure. During the trip, parents can reach staff directly on WhatsApp, and a written midway update with photos goes to every family. Anything a family would want to know comes from us first, the same day, by phone. A 24-hour emergency number goes to every family on acceptance.
-
Every athlete needs travel insurance that covers climbing, swimming, evacuation, medical care, and trip cancellation. It typically costs about $300. Proof of insurance is part of the paperwork due before departure.
-
Accepted athletes receive the paperwork in early spring. It includes waivers, a medical form, the code of conduct, parental consent for travel, a media release, the payment agreement, and proof of insurance. Passports must be valid for at least six months past the return date, so check the expiry date now. Minors traveling without both parents need consent documentation, and we send the specifics with the packet.
-
We call home and work it out together. Families book and pay for the changed flight, and coaches stay with the group. A coach travels home with an athlete only in a life-threatening situation.
-
Athletes 14 to 18 who climb V8 or harder in the gym, or compete at Divisional level.
